Mark down The Eeries as a band to watch in 2015. They’ve got a great mixture of fresh energy and 90’s modern rock nostalgia. Their debut album is expected in early 2015 and it is poised to turn heads. GroundSounds caught up with The Eeries’ Isaiah Silva to discuss their beginnings, breakout track “Cool Kid,” and the new album. Check out the interview below along with their song “Cool Kid.”
Tell us about how you met and formed the band
I guess you could say Cool Kid is the catalyst that brought us together as a band. We had all known one another through the local music community in LA but hadn’t ever created music together. A demo of Cool Kid I shared with Brandon on a whim is ultimately how the 4 of us ended up creating music together. After I gave Brandon the demo of Cool Kid he brought Nadir over and then Nadir brought Eliot over. We instantly bonded musically and as friends. The process was exceptionally simplistic, refreshing and fun. There were no expectations. We were and still are simply just best friends that are passionate about creating. And as cliché as it sounds, we feel that if one of us was removed from the band that the magic would disappear. That’s how much we respect and believe in what one another bring to the table.
“Cool Kid” has a really cool vibe to it. It reminds me a bit of some great rock anthems of the late 90’s. What inspired the song?
Cool Kid was one of those rare songs that finds you. What I mean by that is, it was written in full in 5 minutes both musically and lyrically, purely stream of consciousness. With that said, its inspiration is hard to pin down given there wasn’t any intent behind it. I’ve attempted to analyze my subconscious to answer this question for other interviews but I’ve found that it’s best to let people interpret what they want to from our music… Otherwise I sound like a blabbering fool.
What can we expect from your debut full-length? How long have you been working on it and where did you choose to record it?
The record was recorded over the course of 4 days at the Village Recorder in Santa Monica. We recorded the record live, everybody in the same room playing and singing together at the same time, full takes, no click track, to 2″ tape. The record was self-produced, engineered and mixed by our friend Ghian Wright who we’ve worked side by side with on every session cuz he is a super talented guy. He recorded the Cool Kid demo I gave Brandon, which was recorded the same way the record was. Initially the whole “live” recording process became part of our sound because it was significantly quicker and cheaper to knock out the songs live in a couple takes. But it’s ended up being a blessing in disguise sonically and turned into an integral part of our sound. Regarding the type of material you’ll find on the record, it definitely explores different sounds and vibes than what you hear on Cool Kid. It’s a dynamic record. I actually prefer some of the more moody tracks. But if you’re a fan of Cool Kid you won’t be disappointed either.
Any ideas on a possible release date yet?
We’re told the top of the year. But things like that aren’t up to us anymore which we’re still getting used to.
When you were just starting out, what bands/musicians inspired you?
There are far too many to name but here’s a few off the top of my head:
The Jesus and Mary Chain
The Damned
Descendents
Brian Jonestown Massacre
The Beatles
Failure
…trail of dead
What are your plans for the rest of 2014 and early 2015?
Work. Work. Work. Finish out the year playing holiday shows, hopefully squeeze in another tour run and then we’re closing out the holiday season playing the Seth Myers Show in December. But I’m looking forward to what’s most important to me which is spending time with the people I love over the holidays before kicking off the new year with the record release and spending the year on the road.
If you have one, what is your ultimate goal in music? Are there certain things you are aiming for, or are you simply doing what you love and enjoying the ride?
If I had to choose one I’d say simply doing what I love with people that I love.
When you are writing/creating your music, do you have a go-to spot/location for your writing?
My bed. Comfy.
