Galantis leave LA with a big “Smile” at The Mayan

Brendon Goldwasser

One of the most unique and original DJ duos of our time, Galantis, played for a packed crowd at The Mayan in Downtown Los Angeles this past Monday night. When they came on stage, they had nonstop high energy throughout their whole set, singing their songs, jumping together on stage, and truly getting us involved. Their music was bright and they found the coolest ways to switch up their tracks and include crazy breakdowns and heavier bass drops that really took us for a spin.

Together, with the combination of typical DJ equipment they both had some  interesting drum pads and real symbols that they would use to hype up the tracks a bit more. I really love that situation. There were also several moments during the set where they came out in front of their setup and actually interacted with the crowd and that it made feel really personal and probably a lot different than what usually happens at electronic music shows. With the music they make and the way that they look like they truly love what they do and making people feel this way, it must be a rush for them as much as it is for the audience. They had their team of people hand out masks for everyone to wear and boy did people run with that. Some folks even needed to take several selfies to make sure that the light was hitting their masks just right!

As no surprise their set contained some of their major hits including “Help,” “Smile,” and “Friend (Hard Times).” They also ended up going back to the roots of where Christian Karlsson came from and they did a really dope remix of “Animal” from Miike Snow. After that they went ahead and took it up another notch with their newest single “Runaway (U & I).” All throughout the show, their visuals transformed from underwater scenes with colorful jellyfish to large outdoor landscapes and trippy,  kaleidoscope-like visuals. Sometime they would include clips from their music videos (plenty from their major hit “You”). The Mayan made for an interesting show setting and there wasn’t a bad view in the venue. The bass could’ve been felt on the West side of LA it was so intense. Towards the end of their set they went really old school and remixed one of my favorites “Praise You” by Fatboy Slim.

I would easily put this up there as one of my favorite shows of 2014, not only because of the love of they show their fans, the “Seafox” nation, but because of the messages and feelings evoked with each vocal melody, groovy bass line, and their large, bigger-than-life sound. It sets them apart from everything else out there. Check out some of the pics from the show below!
