LA based soulful-pop songstress Maggie Szabo definitely rocked the boat with her fresh new track “Tidal Waves and Hurricanes.” With her sultry voice Maggie is on the rise, she has a new album on the way and we couldn’t be more excited.

GroundSounds recently caught up with Maggie to talk about her future endeavors, new music and more, check out our exclusive interview below.

For those just discovering Maggie Szabo, can you tell us about your upbringing and how you got started with music?

I grew up in a small town called Dundas in Ontario, Canada and my first memories of knowing music was something I wanted to do was when I was 3 years old. It’s always been who I am. I started taking singing lessons when I was about 8, and was writing a lot of poetry. I wrote my first full song when I was twelve, and haven’t stopped since. I immersed myself in music as much as I could growing up, singing out at local events, sports games, my school band, and writing and recording as much music as I could. Right after I graduated from high school, I decided to take a leap of faith and drive to Nashville. I ended up spending a year and a half there, recording an EP, and then getting signed to a record label in Canada, which brought me back home. After I wrote and released my debut album, I decided LA was where I needed to be. I moved here just over a year ago and there’s no looking back.

How has the transition from Canada to LA been for you? What do you miss most about Canada?

L.A. is like a musical wonderland, so it’s been an exciting transition and it feels amazing being here. I love where I’m from, and I’m proud to be Canadian, but L.A. is the place I need to be for my music.   The thing I miss most is definitely my family… I wish they could be here with me!

We definitely love your fresh new track “Tidal Waves and Hurricanes,” can you tell us about the creative and writing process for this track?

Thanks so much! I didn’t know anyone when I moved to L.A. so I was pretty lost when I got here. I wrote ‘Tidal Waves and Hurricanes’ within the first few months of being here. Feeling alone, lost, and little bit overwhelmed with it all inspired me to write this song. It was kind of my way of telling myself not to give up.

Can you tell us about working on your upcoming album? Thus far, what has been the most rewarding and challenging parts in bringing it all together?

Working on my new album has been a whirlwind. My co-writers, producers and everyone involved have been people I’ve met since moving here, so I’ve been really lucky to be able to develop relationships with such talented people. I think the most rewarding part of it has been able to make the music I want to make, with the purpose of expressing everything I’ve been going through, from love and relationships, to life in general. The whole process was pretty organic too, so the music was able to happen when it was supposed to happen.  The most challenging part has been digging deep, and being honest. It can be scary to come face to face with some things I’ve been trying to hide.

Have you given a name to your upcoming album? If so, what is it?

It’s called ‘Truth’. I didn’t want to hold anything back when making this music…it’s important to me to share only what feels honest.

What is it about soulful-pop that attracts you to this sound?

I’ve always been drawn to soulful music, from Etta James to Aretha Franklin. There’s something about it that’s so honest, which is what I connect to. I guess for me, I’m connected to a soulful-pop sound because it allows me to have fun and experiment with different sounds and directions, but still have that element of organic sound and truth.

What music are you currently listening to and finding inspiration from?

I’ve been loving Sam Smith’s music a lot; his sound, his vibe, everything. Listening to John Mayer never gets old for me either, and I’ve been having a lot of fun listening to a lot of Etta James lately.

When performing on stage what typically goes through your mind?

When I’m on stage, I’m expressing my music to an audience, and it’s one of my favourite places to be. What’s going through my mind? The meaning of the song and really just being in the moment.

Can you tell us about the inspiration for your track “Last Night?”

That song came from one of those mornings when you’re not sure if you made the right decision the night before… I think we all can relate to that!

What’s next for Maggie? What are you currently focusing on?

The release of ‘Truth’ is #1 for me right now. I’m working on a music video for one of the songs, and I want to make sure when I do release my new music, I can share it with as many people as possible.
