The Reasn is a hard working up-and-comer ready to make a splash with his new EP. GroundSounds recently caught up with the talented musician to discuss his new music, moving from the Midwest to LA, and more. Check out the interview below, along with his new song “Better.” If you dig the track, download it HERE

Tell us about how you got started in music. What was the first song you ever wrote?

There was never a specific time I got started in music because I’ve loved music for as long as I can remember. I started singing in church early on and wrote my first song  “I’m a piece of heaven” at age 12. I realized that I couldn’t always express my bottled-up emotionsthe right way, so I learned to write them out and make them come to life in a song.

When did you move from the Midwest to LA? How has that impacted your career so far? What do you miss most about home?

I moved from Missouri to LA two years ago to be more connected to the creative music world and the business side of things. After spending some time in New York, LA seemed like the best place to be to work with producers and develop my artistry. I definitely miss my family the most when I’m away from home.

There’s a lot of honesty and emotion in your lyrics. It makes your songs much more vivid and descriptive than a lot of your ‘contemporaries.’ What inspires you the most from a lyrical perspective?

I want to be the most honest person ever to break as a new artist and be as transparent as possible to the world. I’ve never been afraid of people knowing all my flaws because I know I’m still growing and I’m far from perfect. When people can see that I’m open with them, they will feel like they know me. If they watch someone in the limelight talk openly about the same problems they’re experiencing,my hope is that they will feel more comfortable and less afraid to talk about issues.

What inspired the song “Better” both lyrically and musically?

Lyrically, the song came from true life experiences.

Musically, my producer Neff-U (Michael Jackson, DrDre, Eminem) started playing this dope piano melody and developed the gritty and musical sound of the track. The lyrics and melodies just fell into place from there.

Who do you look up to in the music world? What are you currently listening to?

I don’t look up to anyone right now to be honest. I definitely respect people out there doing their own music. I respect anyone that perfects their craft and puts their heart and soul into their music. I’m currently listening to Childish Gambino, Kanye West, 2 Chainz, The Beatles, Simon& Garfunkel.

What are your plans for the rest of 2014 and into next year?

I’ll keep putting music out for sure. I want as many people as possible to hear my music and can’t wait to bring it to life on stage. My goal is to make people feel that it’s okay to have issues cuz I got a lot of them!

What is your go-to spot in LA when you need to get away?

A bar!

If you have one defined, what is your goal for your music career?

Just go down as the most honest artist to ever live and sell a couple of records along the way!
