Interview: Fiancé discuss debut EP, inspirations and more

Jon Berrien

Delaware based experimental pop four-piece Fiancé recently dropped their debut EP, titled ‘EP 1.’  Featuring a fuzzed out indie rock aesthetic, the five-track EP is full of melody, airy and fresh.

GroundSounds recently caught up with the guys for an exclusive interview about their latest project, musical inspirations and more, check it out below and get to know Fiancé.

You guys have been making music since grade school, can you tell us a little bit about the early years and how it is led to where you are at now?

Jeff, Tyler, and I (andrew) have played in a few groups, always with each other, since we were kids. We always had a tendency to play really weird prog-pop in the early days. As we grew more as songwriters rather than just instrumentalists, we started finding a sound. It took a lot of breaking up bands and reforming to get to this point. Octie joined a little over a year ago and he was naturally on the same page.

What is one thing every visitor should see or do in Delaware?

Go to a house show, go to main street in Newark, go to bars? I have no idea, I don’t get out much.

We read that you guys live in a big farm house, where you throw parties and feature bands and DJs local to you area, can you tell us more about these shindigs?

Tyler is the only remaining resident at the old Papermill house. We all have lived there at one point or another. It’s just a good place for parties because it’s big and the cops rarely come. There are always way too many people at those things haha.

How did you guys decide on the band name Fiancé?

Tyler had the name for a solo project he wanted to start, and rather than go through the shitty process of having to pick a name we went with that because it seemed appropriate.

Can you tell us about working on and bringing your debut EP ‘EP1,’ to fruition?

We had a bunch of songs written and wanted to make our first EP. We got our friend Ryan Williams on board to help track it to his tape machine. That took a few weeks. I then spent a few months recording vocals and mixing in our shitty basement so no one could hear. The lyrics and melodies came after all the music was done. It was a weird process.

Can you tell us a little bit about the recording process?  Whose idea was it to record the EP using a tape machine?

We recorded track by track to tape. We learned a lot about the machine because it was our first time with it. I’d never used reel to reel and we had access to one so we gave it a go.

Can you tell us about the writing and creative process for the track  “Era?”

Jeff and I wrote era on guitar and bass a few years ago along with a bunch of tunes for a solo project we were making. we did all the sampling and production on a computer but never finished it. we really wanted to make it something when Fiance started, so we got the whole band in on it and it worked out great!

Can you tell us a little bit about filming the music video for “Era?” What was this day like?

Filming a video is super awkward. My sister and my best friends all in the video and picture realm did all the work. We just had to drink rum in a basement and pretend to play the song a bunch of times.

What is it about experimental pop that attracts you guys to this sound?

We all are fans of pop music and it underneath the production, these are all just straight forward pop tunes. I think the experimentation comes in with the recording process. We are definitely falling away from a straight pop sound lately though.

What’s next for Fiancé? What are you guys currently working on?

We are in the working process of our first album. Every song we write is getting recorded and finished, then re-recorded and finished after we pick from the demos. We are definitely in the thick of it. I really want people to hear the new stuff, I’ve never written an album before. It’s cool making something cohesive that you really have to think about. Hopefully we will have something new out soon!
