Interview: Black Moth discuss upcoming album, touring and more

When Black Moth released their debut album ‘The Killing Jar’ two years ago which was backed up by some astonishing live shows, it soon became clear that the Black Moth were one of the most exciting bands to come out of the UK in a long time. With the release of their highly anticipated second album ‘Condemned To Hope’ on the horizon we caught up with singer Harriet Bevan to see what we can expect from Black Moth in 2014.

So, two years on since ‘The Killing Jar’ what’s new in the world of Black Moth?

Has it been that long?! Well it’s been a busy old time touring and writing. We did a wonderful UK tour with those badass funky mothers Turbowolf… a few killer festival dates… a single on Too Pure… another mega tour with Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats around Europe and the UK and recorded a whole new album back in December! It’s just taken ages to get it out and in your lugholes.

Jim Sclavunos was back in the producer’s seat for ‘Condemned To Hope’, what made you want to work with him again?

He’s a goddamn genius of course. We love him. He’s the (not so) secret sixth moth and a brilliant, creative producer, who just so happens to have played in some of our all time favourite bands.

Black Moth have become known for their psychedelic doom sound, will their be any surprises on the new album?

Many, many surprises. We still provide the riffs, of course. But this album is a loveable freak, for sure.

‘The Killing Jar’ was pretty bleak lyrically, can we expect a more of the same with the new album?

Ha ha, I’m sorry I’m a goth at heart. Condemned to Hope is hardly sunshine and daisies either but it’s probably weirder that its predecessor. It also contains songs about balloon fetishism, self-immolation, phallic fungi and tumbleweave, amongst other oddities.

The band get coverage across the board ie. not just from the rock and metal press, despite having a pretty uncompromising sound – why do you think that is?

Good songs is good songs.

The band are signed to New Heavy Sounds and were one of the first bands on that label to get a lot of attention, do you feel like your representatives for the label?

I’m not sure what you mean by this but NHS are amazing, true old school indie label and we’re proud to have been their first baby. Every release they have done since has been bang on, quality riffs and we’re like a little family. It’s great.

It’s a well known fact nowadays that bands can rarely be full time musicians, and when I asked your label mates Antlered Man about this they said they only hold a steady job because their jobs are so shitty that nobody else wants them. Consequently, they can go on tour and they’ll still be waiting for them when they get back. Do you find yourselves in a similar situation?

Yes. I finally had a really nice job I had to quit in order to take the Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats tour. It was a no brainer, obviously, but I’m still bitter. Next question!

It’s been mentioned elsewhere that Black Moth are hoping to do a headline tour of the UK later this year, can you see the band taking the Black Moth experience overseas?

Oh yeah definitely! Some of our favourite fans are over there across the pond so we’re dying to get back in that sweaty tour van as soon as possible. We’re hoping before the year is out.

Since the release of ‘The Killing Jar’ the band has toured with some great bands, which has been your favourite tour?

That’s too difficult! The Red Fang guys were lovely but that was just a little tour in Italy. Turbowolf are ultimate megababes and we had a scream with them… but the Uncle Acid tour took us to far more exotic destinations and they were lovely dudes too! We even ended up at London Koko which is perhaps our favourite venue we’ve ever played.

What’s next for Black Moth?

NEW ALBUM!!! FINALLY!!!! ‘Condemned to Hope” is out in September and we’ll be touring like it’s going out of fashion. We’ll even play your nan’s front room. And that’s not a euphemism.
