With the release of her latest synth-heavy ballad “Anyway,” Brooklyn-based Haitian singer/songwriter Moxiie is putting herself on the map. The track has as subtle Caribbean feel with pop and electronica influences, but perhaps more importantly, it has us excited for her future.

For those just discovering Moxiie can you tell us about growing up as a Haitian-raised Brooklynite?
I retreated into myself a lot. We lived in Haiti for some time. We were kinda shipped there not realizing that we would actually live and go to school there. So there was the culture shock of going to Haiti and then the culture shock of coming back. It was really hard to relate to my peers. I was too American for other Haitians and most of them were in ESL so we didn’t relate, we never even spoke. At home, my family spoke English but I still felt very confused in “normal” classes, like everyone else knew how to be or how to act and what to say except me. My mom was pretty Americanized so on the outside I fit in more with most kids. I have always felt like I live between worlds.
Can you tell us about the creative and writing process for your latest synth pounding track “Anyway?”
It was a great experience. Reo of the Soundkillers and I have been great friends for some time now. We would e-mail ideas back and forth. He moved from L.A. to Atlanta and I decided to go down there so that we could get the magic of spontaneity and of working together in person. I just remember sitting and just writing it…at one point I held a mic sitting at the edge of a chair – staying as close to the corner as possible and we started laying the start of “Anyway”. I think incense was burning and it was the first session in his new studio. We worked on it more at his place and went back and forth building on the idea. He is a perfectionist in the best way and I love seeing what else is possible mixing experience with instinct. It was very organic.
What are you currently working on? What can fans expect form you in the future?
Right now I’m working the video for Anyway. We’re really excited about it. My friends Jonatan Mejia (& stylist) and Chris Vongsawat (fashion filmmaker and photographer) are just putting some finishing touches on it.
I’m working on a new project and I feel like it’s some of the best and most genuine work I’ve ever done.
I would just like to be with people who need comfort those times when they’re not out dancing.
