SHOW REVIEWS

S. Carey plays The Troubadour

Brendon Goldwasser

Watching S. Carey perform at The Troubadour was an experience that is hard to put into words, which will make this live show review a bit difficult, nonetheless it is also extremely necessary that you know why you NEED to go to one of his shows.

I, of course, have to always mention the opening acts at shows, especially in this case. Now I will admit to, in the past, been quick when talking about the opener because well…they are the opener and not the main reason people spent money and effort to get to the show (most of the time). My perspective on this has started to change, though, because sometimes the first act can be surprisingly awesome and almost worthy of headlining their own tour. The Pines are a great example of this. They are touring with S. Carey and are a really laid-back, folky group that transported us from the busy city to the vast fields and valleys of the Midwest, as they hail from Iowa and our now based in Minneapolis. This was their first time playing at The Troubadour, and to me, that’s pretty cool that as an audience member, I got to be a part of that experience along with them. I felt their excitement and saw the passion and soul in the music they came to play. Folks, you cannot go wrong with an upright bass and slide guitar, ever.

Now, onto the main act of the evening S. Carey. Wow. Such an incredible show. S. Carey is currently on tour, playing shows in support of his recent album Range of Light, the follow up to his 2010 debut. The music has such an otherworldly feel to it. His voice is rich with emotion and meaning, and every song builds, leading the audience on a journey not quite like anything else. Being that Carey is a part of the band that plays and records with Bon Iver, there were definitely some similarities between the two, but he definitely sets himself apart, too. With the full band in tow, he creates a hypnotic live show of orchestral-folk, putting the audience in the midst of Range of Light‘s ghostly and beautiful panorama.

Overall, solid evening of live music! Discovered a new favorite, The Pines, and strongly reaffirmed my stamp of approval for S. Carey and his whole band. Be sure to check out both this Summer if you have the chance.
