If there’s one word to describe the music of Kan Wakan, it’s “elegant.” There’s an elegance in every aspect of their album Moving On, released earlier this month. The album is filled with a timeless quality that is nearly impossible to attain. With beautiful and soulful vocals, skilled melodies, and grand accompaniment, the album plays like the soundtrack to an epic tale of romance.

Tracks like “Are We Saying Goodbye,” “Like I Need You,” and the title track are brilliant explorations of style and atmosphere, and the closing stretch of “Mont Blanc” and “Midnight Moon Pt. I + II” provide a perfect finishing touch. More than just a sum of its parts, Moving On shouldn’t be broken down into a critique of songs. The album is cohesive, flows beautifully, and should be taken in as one musical piece.

I saw Kan Wakan live a while back and noted how amazing all the parts fit together. This isn’t music to pop on for 3 minutes, nod your head, and sing along with. This isn’t an album where I give you a few “standout tracks” you can cherry pick and throw on a playlist. This is an album that caters to a specific mood and envelops you in the atmosphere it creates. All the layers, arrangements, peaks and valleys should be given time to fully sink in. Anyone searching for something different, something you’re not normally listening to…Moving On may be the musical reward you’re yearning for.

Writing an album and composing an album are two different things. With the intricacy, attention to detail, and impeccable combination of elements, it’s clear that Moving On is a refined composition that will stand out as one of the year’s best.
