Canadian DJ/Hip-Hop artist Nova Rockafeller recently released a self-made video for her song “1990’s.” She’s set to release a new EP soon on Island Records. As you can see from our interview, she is anything but normal and anything but boring. Prepare to laugh, be entertained, and maybe even slightly confused as we get a brief look at what makes Nova…Nova.
When she says “I been sending em crickets,” she’s not kidding. Before she was signed, she sent Island a big inflatable dinosaur in the mail to get their attention. Check out the interview and her video for “1990’s” below!
How did you get started in music? What was the first song you wrote about and what did it sound like?
“This empty pocket” was my first rap song ever. I was 16 and super angsty and felt empty. Now I’m 25 and I’m still fuckin angsty and feel empty…
Tell us about your upcoming EP…how many songs will be on it and is there a song from it that you are particularly excited about?
I’m just excited we’re finally putting out music. I’ve been in the lab for two years and I feel like the label is secretly trying to kill me. But I WILL NOT DIE AND IF YOU THINK IM GOING TO FORGET ABOUT THIS I WILL SPEND ALL THE MONEY THAT TAXES DIDN’T TAKE AND FLY TO NEW YORK EVEN THOUGH I HATE PLANES AND TELL YOU ALL MY FEELINGS. Damn I been sending em crickets because that’s all I hear over here, you know what I mean? I love money I really want more. I like all the songs.
Where do you draw inspiration from lyrically?
The depths of my soul. And Wikipedia. Sometimes I just call my friends like “can you just give me some random nouns” and that works…. Sometimes I ask my Facebook fan page but low key they are terrible at songwriting.
We love your lyric video for “1990’s” and I’m impressed you were able to put that together. How long did that process take?
Damn forever, but I’m broke now so if you know anyone who need a video tell em call me 3475747192, I have a good turnaround time.
If you had to pick one, what is your favorite 90’s video game?
Kid chameleon.
What do you have coming up after the EP release? Any exciting touring plans?
Fuck the EP. I really want to do a laser tag tour.
What has been the most memorable show you’ve played so far?
Well since I signed I’ve been sober for all of them so they’re all pretty memorable, but personally I like being drunk more because I like it when the world gets wavy. Spinny. Gravity.
If you could play a “dream show” with two other artists/bands, who would you share the stage with and where would you perform?
Mmmm I hate music.
