Festival Review: Brokechella 2014

Still the best $10 a music lover in LA can spend.

Brokechella 2014 took place this past weekend in the warehouse district of Downtown LA. Housing 3 indoor warehouse stages and one outdoor mainstage, there was a huge variety of music throughout the entire day.

On the Brownies and Lemonade stage, we got to experience Bay Area based rapper Duckworth, who spit his ever-changing, lyrical “MultiDimensional” flow over some really fresh beats. Another standout performance from this stage was a DJ called Fernet. Fernet came to the stage dressed like Jesus Christ, but threw down some fantastic mashups of modern EDM and classic 90s tracks from our youth. He had us all rocking out like some beat junkie disciples.

New for this year was the Lounge stage, that featured funky singer-songwriter types, as well as stand-up comedy. We were able to catch some soulful, sultry tunes courtesy of singer-songwriter Katie Boeck. Later on in the evening we caught a swingin’, bluesy set from The Mots Nouveaux that really thrilled the Lounge crowd. Their sound was part early 1900’s vocal blues/part Maroon 5 tinged funk-n-roll, but it felt good.

Throughout the festival there were unique art installations such as the “Walk On The Art,” display from Frank Rozasy. Dozens of hand drawn pieces of plywood were laid out together on the concrete, making a walkable corner of art that came together in a really interesting way. In addition to some really unique pieces of art, there were also craft and clothing vendors selling everything from turntable shaped watches to superhero bowties.

It was all great music, art, crafts and of course food trucks. We had the pleasure of gobbling down some Colombian style hot dogs topped with pink sauce (mayo+ketchup), pineapple sauce, cilantro sauce and potato chips, thanks to Mucho Perro.

Suffice to say Brokechella 2014 was a big success with over 4,000 people attending, nearly doubling their attendance from last year. For any music lover who chooses not to attend Coachella’s second weekend, Brokechella is the place to be.
