Interview with Metronomy

Jon Berrien

With their fourth studio album Love Letters officially out, Metronomy is on the grind. The London based band is currently on the European leg of their new tour, with a stop in the states coming soon.

GroundSounds recently caught up with lead singer Joseph Mount for a quick chat to talk about their latest album, life on the road and more.

Joe thanks for chatting with us, where are you currently at?

I am in Copenhagen we have a day off we are playing a gig tomorrow so I am just relaxing.

How has it been on the road?

It has been very well, we are having a really great time, the shows have been all sold out and the crowds have been great. We aren’t tired or anything, we are excited to come to America.

Love Letters just came out can you tell us a bit about working on this album, you must have been excited for its release?

It was a very enjoyable record to make. The studio that we used it was kind of an analog type of recording.

The thing is, bands, they have months to live with a record before the world hears it. So I was very excited to see what people would think. But then as soon as it’s released, you have this sort of weird emotion, like its gone, out to the world and then you tour.

Can you tell us a little bit about the recording process and using analog?

I have always made music with computers and I have always kind of relied on how you can edit stuff on the computer. I just wanted to learn to make records the way people use to do it.

It was almost kind of a challenge to me to see what if I didn’t have a computer.  It was a very rewarding way to work.

What was one of your most enjoyable songs to work on from Love Letters?

I think “Love Letters” was very like…. what you hear on that song was what was happening in the room, it was all live, apart from my vocals.

It was nice to watch people play it while we recorded it and then just be done.

What was it like working with Michael Gondry on the music video for “Love Letters?”

Yea, kind of great a dream come true. He has a creative interesting brain. The cool thing about making any video is that you can be apart of someone else’s vision.

It was a pleasure to work with him.

What was the actual day of the video shoot like?

It was a one-day shoot they set everything up the night before.  Then we went down there practiced a bit and ended up shooting like 13 takes or something around there.  Some video shoots can be really exhausting, but this one was really laid back.

The best thing about making videos is that you feel like you are really achieving something.

We at GroundSounds recently checked out the I’m Aquarius game app, can you tell us about this project?

I was extensively involved in the development of that game. So I have been playing that for months and months and months.  I think it is quite difficult but it is cool.  It’s tough but I can already see from the high scores that some people are really putting some time into it.

What is next for Metronomy?

Touring and great music.
