Summertime is officially here. Even if your weather isn’t sunny, your atmosphere now is—thanks to American Authors. Their debut full-length album Oh, What A Life is non-stop toe tapping and head nodding. It’s incredibly fun to listen to. It’s super catchy, but not so sugary that it gets old quickly. It’s the perfect fun beach/park/bike ride/warm weather album.

Oh, What A Life is bouncy, upbeat indie-pop at its best. Lead singles “Believer” and “Best Day Of My Life” are addicting tracks that show why AA can write pop hits on the same level as anyone. “Luck” showcases the band’s depth and variety, with a great balance of moods and texture within the song.

“Think About It” may not get the big-single attention, but it may actually be the catchiest song on the album, and one of the most endearing alt-pop tracks in recent memory. The song also perfectly encapsulates the album with the predominant line “Don’t over-think about it.” This is more or less the mantra for the album: if you’re looking for ‘Bon Iver – Arcade Fire – Sigur Ros, etc’ complexity and layering, look elsewhere. This is an extremely well executed FUN album. The band won’t get enough credit for being fun without being cheesy or generic. This is not an easy accomplishment. A bouncing banjo backbone in a track like “Trouble” or the combination of elements to create the fantastic closer “Oh, What A Life” are signs of a very talented band that knows exactly what they’ve set out to do…a band that’s here to make a statement and that’s here to stay.

Fans of The Mowgli’s, Youngblood Hawke, and The Academy Is… will love this album. It’s the most fun album we’ve seen so far this year and it’s the perfect summer soundtrack. Even if the weather isn’t quite summer yet, put American Authors in your headphones and you’ll immediately be sent to the beach!
