The Overtime tour is officially underway for New York’s emerging electronic three-piece Cash Cash. The production/DJ trio have without a doubt been on the grind, consistently pumping out fresh new tracks and remixes.
GroundSounds had the pleasure of catching up with one third of the band- Jean Paul Makhlouf, as he was getting off a flight in Dallas. Get in the know with Cash Cash and check out our exclusive interview below.
What do you enjoy most about being on the road?
Being on the road is cool because when you’re in the studio for too long and stuck behind the same four walls, you kind of go insane. Right when we hit the wall, that is our manager hits us up, and is like we have some dates for you. We go out and it just feels so good, see different places, and meet up with friends we’ve made along the way. Performing is awesome too.
What do you guys enjoy most about performing live?
Performing live is just always a good time you kind of just like forget about all the negative stuff that is going on in your life, it’s the right here right now. I think everyone is on the same wavelength too, just forget about what happened during the work week with whatever job, you just get to let loose and feed off that energy.
So it’s the Overtime tour that you guys are just starting, what was it like creating the Overtime EP?
The EP, it took about six months to do. We had an idea to just do different stuff with vocals and different features. I think we ended up getting a really cool vibe.The way we designed the EP had a good flow too, it was unified and came together real quick.
Do you have a favorite track off of the EP?
Personally, I think either “Kiss The Sky” or “Take Me Home.” “Kiss The Sky” has a really cool vibe, and “Take Me Home” felt right when it was done and just the way the melody moves with the chords- we really hit it home with that one.
Can you tell us a little more about creating “Take Me Home” and the inspiration behind it?
Well Bebe the girl singing in it she is super talented and we got together with her and it came together really quick. We were just playing on the acoustic guitar. When we write a lot of our music, we start on an acoustic guitar or piano and try to just hum different melodies. If it doesn’t hold on a piano we know that it might not hold when you electrify and put beats on it. So we actually ended up doing an acoustic version, we went back to the acoustic guitar and piano and built a whole new house on top of it and you can check that out on our Soundcloud.
What is it about the electric sound that attracts you guys to it?
For us we kind of just got hooked being producers. We started out mixing, mastering, and recording all of our music way back in the day. Even in like high school Sam and I were sick of spending our money at the studio when we were like 14 to 15 years old, and so we just learned how to record ourselves. And that just kind of got our heads inside a computer and inside the whole production world and we started messing with different plugins and midi and it just kind of like found us ya know?
When you guys remix songs what do you set out to accomplish?
We love the remixing it is a part of what we do, it helps keep us up to date with our chops and stuff and helps us raise the bar and try new stuff and stay competitive with our sound. We like to see if we can split the chord progressions and see songs in a new interval and we like to show songs in a different light, while staying true to the song.
Will you guys be remixing any songs soon?
Right now we are just kind of focusing on new music, we have been working with a lot of new people. We did a song with Christina Perry, Johnny Rzeznik and Capital Cities. We’re just working on different features and trying to different collabs for our original stuff. We will be doing remixes every once in a while, but they are definitely going to slow down, while we are working on new music.
What has it been like working with Christina, Rzeznik and Capital Cities?
It’s been great, we have been working with people that we really like. We have been going after these sessions, we requested Johnny Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls, because we grew up fans.
Christina Perry that came from the label and that just feels like family. And Capital Cities is cool because we did a remix for them first and they loved the remix so much and we hit it off and then we were like hey lets do an actual production together. We got in the lab and started to cook something up.
What has it been like in the studio with Capital Cities?
They have been great. We had a whole day with them in LA and its was cool we worked on a really tight song and we’re trying to wrap it up in the next month or so, it’s going to be a dope one.
Do you know when the songs with Christina, Johnny Rzeznik, and Capital Cities might come out?
Yea, I don’t want to give an exact date yet, because I don’t want to give any wrong information, but I think the Johnny Rzeznik is going to be first.
Are you guys working on a full length too?
I mean the goal will be a full length at some point, but right now we are kind of just thinking like we don’t want to wait on anything so maybe we will do another EP and then maybe a full length. Just depending on how things are going.
