High energy, fast-paced, relentlessly catchy rock songs- that’s what you’ll get with LA Font’s latest album, Diving Man. Based out of Echo Park, this rock quartet is full of tasty licks and bold grooves.  GroundSounds recently caught up with LA Font singer and guitarist Danny Bobbe for an exclusive interview, check it out below.

Your new album “Diving Man” has just been released! Congrats! How does it feel to finally have it out?

We keep getting TwitPics of the translucent yellow Diving Man vinyl spinning on different people’s record players. Each time that happens I put my hand in the air and say “Yessss.”

Why did you guys choose the name “Diving Man”?

The song itself, which appears on the album, has a lot of the themes that appear elsewhere on the record. Plus it has a nice level of abstraction. Sounds pretty cool to say.

What was the most rewarding and most difficult part about bringing this album to fruition?

Most rewarding was finishing up tracking and knowing we got everything in there to the best of our ability. There was no “ah man, I wish I coulda.”

Shopping the album around was the worst because it took so long. We had something going for three months and then it fell apart when the contract started going back and forth. But we’re stoked that the album landed on New Professor.

When people listen to it for the first time, is there anything in particular that you want them to experience and or feel?

I want the album to feel quick. And it’s not a record you have to listen to closely. Just drive around with friends and pop in and out of the album from time to time. But we’re happy with the sonics of the album so I feel it’s also head phones, bottle of red wine worthy.

What is your favorite thing to do on a weekend in Echo Park?

There’s this long stair set across the street from Liquor Royale. My favorite thing to do is grab a tall can from there and sit near the top of the steps and watch Sunset Blvd. traffic below.

What is it about lo-fi 90s sounds that you guys find compelling?

It’s just the sound a bunch of twenty somethings with guitars make. For me, I’m kinda too stupid and or too lazy to program a drum machine so I’m just like” well guitars are pretty cool”

What are you guys looking forward to most at your upcoming record release party (Dec. 3rd/The Echo)?

I saw Washing Machines (who are on the bill with us) last night and they ruled it. The dude was punching his guitar with his fist during the last song. That’s commitment.

What was the creative process and inspiration for the tracks “Blood Orange” and “Collect The Dust”?

I remember being in the practice space late one night with a pint of vodka when Collect the Dust was written. And I remember walking around Echo Park at 4 in the morning writing the third verse to Blood Orange.

Does everyone in the band love hockey? Why Sid Crosby?!

Sid the Kid has everything. Speed, talent and most importantly style. I’m not sure if he’s a hero to anyone in the band other than myself.

After the record release party what’s next? Will you guys be touring anytime soon?

Yeah, we’re planning to tour the entire US in June. So be on the look out!
