Interview with TRAAMS

Jon Berrien

Raucous post-punk band TRAAMS have emerged on the music scene with high octane tracks and head banging shows. The Chichester based three-piece have definitely created some positive noise with the release of their debut album Grin. GroundSounds recently had the chance to catch up with bassist Leigh, check out our exclusive interview below.

For those just discovering TRAAMS, how did you guys come together form the band? Once formed did you guys have any immediate goals?

We’ve been mates for a few years and decided to get together to play. We wrote a nice song and decided to do it every week. We didn’t really have any immediate goals but we did want to get in the studio quite quick.

Is there a meaning behind TRAAMS? How did you guys come up with your band name?

It’s an aviation term that we liked.

Your debut album GRIN is out now, what has it been like working on this album and bringing it to fruition?

It’s been great fun, we had been writing for it since day one and it is simply a product of our first year of writing together. It’s nice to get it all wrapped up and out there.

Can you tell us about the creative process and inspiration behind your track ‘Flowers’?

That was the track we wrote in our first practice, well an early version of it at least. It came out of nowhere and we tidied it up for a session or two and started gigging it.

Who came up with the grudgy video idea for ‘Flowers’? That must have been a sticky day!

James Burgess who filmed it. We very much liked his idea and bought a load of custard. It was very sticky though the worst part was probably repeatedly eating / spitting out recycled warm custard.

What has it been like working with FatCat Records?

Splendid.

You guys are from across the pond! What was it like growing up in Chichester, England?

We grew up down the road in a seaside town called Bognor Regis. It’s the sunniest place in the UK. Can’t complain really, I just remember slot machines and snooker halls growing up.

What do you guys enjoy doing when your not making music? Do you have any hobbies or cool hang out spots?

I (Leigh) like hanging out, anywhere really. Stu likes eating oranges and Adam likes motorcycling and flying planes.

What do you guys enjoy most about live shows?

Making a racket and watching great bands.

If you guys (individually) had to assign an adjective to yourself what would it be?

Stu is lovely
Adam is indolent
Leigh is jocular

What’s next for TRAAMS? What are you guys currently working on?

More gigs and more recording. We are currently doing a lot of writing and trying to get more shows overseas.
