Travis Garland Track-by-Track Review

The long awaited self-titled, debut album by Travis Garland dropped earlier this week. Here is our GroundSounds.com official track-by-track review.

Where To Land

Seductively layered guitars and a pulsating beat create a plush bed for Travis’ vocals to lie in. With an ascending melody and a sweet tone, Travis is like a shooting star looking to land properly in some young lady’s heart.

Motel Pool

Travis promises to wash the worries off your mind tonight. A moonlit shuffling groove that leads into a sexy, slow grinding hook that feels like ripples in the pool. The verses flash through scenes of a late night rendezvous….going laps and laps…rounds and rounds…

Easy

Something sultry for the hip-shakers, this track feels like a Middle Eastern inspired salsa song. Travis admires the simple flawlessness of a sexy mama he encounters on the dance floor. A great ending section with a cool electric piano vamp…the remix DJs might have some fun wit this one.

Abby Lee

Some of his southern roots come out on this mid-tempo ballad. Soulful, bluesy, and undeniably from the church of Garland, you can definitely feel the spirit as Travis belts “Abby Lee, have your way with me.” Travis really shows off his vocal range by taking us to church. You may need to go to confession after listening to this track. Real talk.

Clouds

Crunchy guitar chords, a wobbling, almost disorienting, washed-out wah wah guitar and heavy 808s compliment Travis’ crystal clear voice in this song. Probably one of the most addicting tracks production wise. “The way your name rolls off my lips, I think there’s no better sound,” Travis claims. Lovin’ is cleary Travis’ drug of choice, and this track is severly intoxicating.

Pullin My Hair

Fat ass drums and a deep, swerving bass line sprinkled with a little bit of Jamaican and tropical Latin flavor set this track off. A sexy, dirty, steamy song about pulling hair, I think the dancers at Tootsie’s Cabaret in Miami are going to love this. Put this on repeat and twerk away.

You Made Your Bed (So Lay In It)

A dark warped String section opens the song, but then Trav gets right into it singing, “You fucked up, don’t you know it babe?”. Haunting synthstrings echo just like the memories of Travis that will haunt his ex. By far the deepest track on the album.

Neighbor

A fun, sexually charged song about the lonely girl next door. This ain’t what Mr. Rogers meant when he was asking to be your neighbor.  My favorite track by far, with my favorite line “While he’s away girl, Imma do you a favor, let you borrow some sugar…”

Other People

“I just want the best for you girl, even if that don’t include me,” Travis claims. On some true love type stuff, Travis reluctantly let’s go of a loved one go even though he doesn’t trust her heart with other people. A really passionate, more pop-oriented track that comes across really well.

Modern Life

A funky, southern-rock influenced track. It feels like driving down a dirt road in a pick-up truck. Travis talks about the complexities of living in digital age and the kind of girl he could fall in love with these days. There’s a nice little guitar solo in here too. Definitely got a young Lenny Kravitz vibe going on, but it just goes to show Garland’s versatility and some of those Texas roots.

All She Wanna Do Ft. Casey Veggies

A slick, danceable little keyboard and bass track with some nice percussion added in. For all the good girls who have act bad for the right guy, this track is for y’all. There’s a nice little feature for LA based rapper Casey Veggies. “But all she wanna do is…” Travis never says exactly what it is she wants to do, but I’m sure it’s fun. Real fun. I think he said something about whips and chains…?

Blue Electric Roses

A smooth, spacey R&B beat that has a nice low end you can mob out to. Caught up in the stunning beauty of someone’s eyes, Travis details something of a “love at first sight” experience. The harmonies on this track are where Travis really stands out; they just float over the beat perfectly.

Homewrecker

Hard hitting stuttered drums and washy guitar strums makes for an effective pop/R&B crossover tune. Doing more than just cooking in the kitchen and breaking dishes everywhere, Travis proclaims he will turn you into a homewrecker. The song takes a really cool turn into a minimalist-electro-808-requiem type of groove.

Chariots of Fire

With chunky 8th note guitar strums and the emotive pleas of Travis’ falsetto, this is a cool rock ballad that feels like R&B. A striking hook, “and the chariots of fire always bring you back to me,” describes an unstoppable passion and love. Pretty epic.

1 of 1

Back to that funky stuff on this one. There’s gonna be some real finger snapping and hand clapping going on when you hear this. This track is all about appreciated that special one, the only one. Favorite line is “Perfect ain’t enough to explain all you are.”
