Their music keeps you movin’ on your feet! GroundSounds recently caught up with the New York based producer/DJ duo Live City. Check out our exclusive interview with Ethan and Jake below!

For those not familiar with your music, can you tell us a little bit about ‘Live City’, and how you guys came together?

We’ve been good friends since we were 10 years old. First it was Pokemon, fast forward 11 years to a European backpacking/raving vacation, and the rest was history. We had dabbled in music production previously but we decided to take it more seriously three years ago.

How do you guys create your music?  Can you describe the process?

We can’t say we really have a formula. As you’ll see from our releases, we hop around in styles and try to avoid making the same thing twice or use the same sounds. We like to push our creative boundaries with each song, so it may start with a melody, it may start with drums, whatever really gets the juices flowing.

What was it like working on your single ‘Justified’? How did this track come to fruition?

We wanted to make an original that we could play in our sets for years to come. We tend to draw influences from the “dutch house” and “melbourne bounce” style, so that’s where the funky bouncy vibe came from. We hear too many tracks with same boring formula; big trance chords into a minimal drop, so we wanted to create something truly unique.  I think we nailed it since we haven’t heard anything like it!

How do you two decide on which songs to remix?

We love doing vocal remixes. Listeners can have the familiarity with the original yet still taken in an entirely new direction with our spin on it. The more unique the song the better, as nobody wants to hear 50 remixes of the same song.

Do you two have a favorite venue or club to perform at?

As long as the booth monitors are right, and the speakers are rocking, we don’t discriminate. We love all venues!

Your latest remix of “Bottom Of The River” by Delta Rae is fresh – what was it like working with this track?

This was our first opportunity to work on an indie-folk type record and give it an electro spin. We loved the vocals and the grittiness of the original, so we wanted to keep that intact while giving the listeners a surprise when it hits.

What do you guys set out to accomplish when remixing a song?

We always try to use as little as possible from the original track. This pushes us creatively and also makes it our own.

How did you guys decide on the name ‘Live City?

If you’ve ever gotten “Live” before then you’ll know why.

What advice would you give to up and coming DJs/Producers?

Never stop working hard and believe in yourself. Every producer spends years going through rejection and disappointments. The cream always rises to the top though.

What are your favorite tequilas?

Hornitos on the rocks. Bring it.

What are you guys currently working on? What can fans expect from ‘Live City’ in the future?

We’ve got a big remix alongside our good friend and legend Tommie Sunshine for Robert Delong “Global Concepts”, as well as another kick-ass remix for the up-and-coming future stars Cash Cash. Aside from those, there are a few originals we have finished up but can’t disclose the labels just yet. We can say that we are super excited for those though.
