For these posts, I always like to pick artists that represent current trends and shifts happening within the music industry. This week, let me introduce you to Oh Boy Les Mecs.
This group has a really interesting vibe and mixes experimental elements with psychedelic, synth-heavy rhythms. The lead singer reminds me a bit of Bjork in how she phrases her words and sentences. The lyrics are powerful, but the music is even more so. Overall, their live performance is extremely entertaining. I caught them opening up for The Dig at Bootleg Bar and that space was perfect for their music.
The main group consists of two people, including Tracy the singer and her male counterpart, who both control pads and synths/keys. Occasionally, the guy would pick up a bass and play that along with the beats, which was great. They had a drummer with them for this performance, so that helped bring the energy up. I can sometimes get bored with acts who only have looped beats on stage, instead of actually hitting the pads live or having a drummer back up the electronic beats. It adds a more real, human element to the songs.
They’ve been busy this year, having released their first EP titled Nurture Nature. The EP consists of five tracks that are driving, rhythmic, and dreamy. It’s perfect for some night drives through the city and definitely great for just putting on your headphones and losing yourself in the sounds. The EP is available for streaming on Spotify or their Soundcloud page, as well as for purchase from the iTunes store. My favorite tracks off of the EP are “Helium” and “Nurture Nature.” Be sure to check out their website for more info and music!
