Artist Spotlight: Kevin Laurence

Brendon Goldwasser

This week, I’d like to share with you the music of Kevin Laurence. Kevin is a 26 year old singer-songwriter with musical influences such as Elton John, The Beatles, and Billy Joel. I also think some of his music is similar to Ben Folds, Guster, and Rufus Wainwright. His music is complemented by his smooth vocals, which you can tell he has clearly honed over the past few years. The combination of his insanely good piano skills and his lyrics makes for one hell of a performer. I know Kevin from seeing him play open mics every Monday last year at Cafe Muse (which unfortunately is no longer in business). He is a great musician and also someone who recognizes that local artists need to help one another, not compete for the spotlight.

He has a great following on YouTube, including almost 2,000 Subscribers and close to 400,000 video views in total! He really knows how to attract people to his music and to his shows. He puts up these incredible cover songs of some of the most popular artists. He does them all justice, too. His cover of “Your Song” by Elton John has almost 50K views. He is using not only his talent to gain a local fan base, which is certainly necessary, but he’s also tech/internet savvy. He understands the current shift happening with how we view and interact with the media we enjoy. This puts him one step ahead of other artists who don’t have the first clue how to send out a Facebook message about their show. Let’s be real, you’re not going to see someone play live, especially for a cover charge, without hearing them first. Kevin gives us that option with his YouTube videos.

He’s currently got a couple EP’s available on Spotify, as well as on iTunes for purchase. I suggest checking out his 2006 release Green To Red EP, which has one of my favorite tracks of his titled “Everything But Me”. There’s also an awesome cover of “The Only Living Boy In New York” on that EP. His most recent release Island Of Forgotten Memories has some great tracks, but my favorite on that one is definitely the opening track titled “Pilot”. He recently put up a new song on his website that’s so catchy you’ll want to hear it over and over again. It’s also available for free download, so go get it! Free music, hooray!

Kevin is a true, modern musician with high aspirations and goals for the future. If he keeps going in the direction he’s currently headed, then I’d expect lots of new music and live shows from this guy. He’s always playing at cool spots around the city, so be sure to check out his website, subscribe to his YouTube Channel, and follow him on social media to get updates on all the great stuff he has planned for us.
