Welcome to the ‘Weekly Grind’ where GroundSounds Editor-in-Chief Jake Craney recaps the week in music, featuring the latest album releases, tracks, and recommendations. Plus, he keeps you up to date on GroundSounds’ exclusive music news and interviews.

This week has been dominated for me by 3 albums: I Love You by The Neighbourhood, Indicud by Kid Cudi, and Mystery Skulls EP by Mystery Skulls.

The Neighbourhood’s album is every bit as good as I had hoped. It’s chill, yet catchy and compelling. Songs like “Afraid,” “Everybody’s Watching Me,” “W.D.Y.W.F.M,” and “Float” along with the tracks we’ve already heard make this a perfect album for a relaxing summer drive, chill party soundtrack, weed smoking (if you’re into that), or pretty much any occasion where you want something low-key that’ll be pretty much universally liked. They did a great job with this sound. Favorites: “Afraid,” “Sweater Weather,” Everybody’s Watching Me (Uh Oh),” “Female Robbery,” “W.D.Y.W.F.M.”

Indicud. Damn. This one took me by surprise. Having been a fan of the song “Up, Up and Away” and a couple others (but not really a huge Cudi fan or anything) gave me pretty much no expectation for this album. After giving it a couple listens, I was completely drawn in. It’s slow and deliberate, very chill, but it’s really, really good. Yes, it’s a bit long, but I’ll never complain about too much music (even you, new Paramore album). “Red Eye” featuring HAIM is a particular highlight. One of the many gems this album has to offer. Dude is extremely talented. Favorites: “Red Eye,” “Just What I Am,” “Immortal,” “King Wizard.”

Something that jumped onto my radar last week was Mystery Skulls, the electro-dance-pop project of Luis Dubuc. After interviewing Luis at Brokechella last week, then seeing his amazing live set, I was totally hooked. The Mystery Skulls EP is literally comprised of the first five songs he ever wrote for MS. They are genuine pop songs sung over ridiculously catchy dance beats. This will appeal to multiple genres and it’s almost impossible to not start dancing when listening to this EP. It’s truly one of my favorite discoveries of 2013 and I am eagerly awaiting his next release. Favorites: “Money,” “You,” “Brainsick.”

Coming up next week on GroundSounds: full coverage from the Brokechella festival, including 5 video interviews. Plus, perhaps even more video interviews might be edited and ready to post–could be a huge week for video content.
