Welcome to the ‘Weekly Grind’ where GroundSounds Editor-in-Chief Jake Craney recaps the week in music, featuring the latest album releases, tracks, and recommendations. Plus, he keeps you up to date on GroundSounds’ exclusive music news and interviews.
What a week. New music everywhere. Not just releases, but bands/artists I’ve discovered as well, such as Mystery Skulls, Hello Echo, Random Holiday, King Washington, yOya, Villa, and Atilla. The new Fall Out Boy officially came out, although I dove into that in last week’s Weekly Grind. The Neighbourhood’s debut album comes out next week, but was available for streaming this week. Spacey, chill, great relaxing music. They are going to be huge and they’ve crafted an album that’s going to merit that.
The new Phoenix album was up for streaming this week. Still haven’t fully digested it—only listened twice through. It’s definitely good, not a lot of variety though. I keep hearing the same notes/sounds/styles over and over. If I love something and it ain’t broke, don’t fix it (Hi, Rise Against!), but at the same time, don’t play it safe and let things blend together. I will enjoy this album based on the first two listens, but I also might get bored with it pretty quickly.
New Kid Cudi is out, it’s deliberate and plodding, not immediately accessible…but already I’m liking a lot of the tracks. I haven’t even gotten started with the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album. Put that on the schedule for next week…Spring and Summer are just non-stop music.
GroundSounds is more ‘on the grind’ than ever. This week we filmed interviews with The Classic Crime (up now) and Gia Medley (up next week). We will be covering the Brokechella festival this weekend getting some great interviews in the process, and we’ve got two more interviews lined up for next week as well. Tons of great video content on the way!
Post of the week: new Daft Punk song—it’s just so damn catchy!
